Abstract

Introduction: Bronchial carcinoid tumours seldom occur in children, sometimes mistaked for a minor disease and diagnosed slowly. Because of low clinical suspicion and the variable ways of presentation, diagnosis may be delayed. Objective: We report on a patient who diagnose tumours slowly because mistaken for asthma. It is hoped that increased awareness of the tumor can lead to earlier diagnosis. Results: This case describes a 14-year-old boy, presenting with asthma-like symptoms throughout 3 years. He was treated as asthma but wax and wane. When he was presented finally, he was treated with asthma but not regulated well. Chest x-ray showed an hyperlucent in left lung, so we rechecked HRCT for unilateral hyperinflation diseases diagnosis. It was found 1x1cm nodule in left main bronchus. We did bronchoscopy for detection and biopsy, and discovered a round mass in the left bronchus, 2~3cm away from carina. In the biopsy, it was bronchial carcinoid tumor, so we resected tumor. Conclusion: Because symptoms of bronchial carcinoid tumours are various, it is misdiagnosed frequently firstly. Variable symptoms were observed depending on position and size of tumors, so it is misdiagnosed with asthma, pneumonia and foreign body. An additional examination such as chest CT or bronchoscopy were necessary when respiratory symptoms persist in spite of treatment.
